Thankful and challenged

A treasured friend and mentor celebrates a milestone birthday today. As I was walking this morning, I was thinking about the difference this person has made in my life over the past 25 years. He’s been a constant in my corner!

My friend is humble. He’s real. He knows his flaws. Since our lives crossed paths he has been available for me, willing to go out of his way to support me. He’s walked alongside me, advocated for me, laughed and wept with me – and we have disagreed as well! My friend is kind. He’s an encourager. He listens well, and lovingly challenges me. He knows how to have courageous conversations. He’s curious and asks good questions. He cares genuinely for people. He is loyal. He’s a good man, who continues to model for me a Jesus who is lovingly accessible and invested in others.

As I read this description again, not only am I deeply thankful for the gift of this friendship, but I am challenged afresh. I see where I need to keep growing and changing that I might be a friend – more like my friend!
