Compassion amid misinformation

Those playing divisive, race-card politics in Australia will keep getting the headlines. But the real story should not be forgotten. The people impacted most by fear-based, populist, political decisions and policies are usually the most vulnerable and those with the least voice. Let’s not let their real stories and needs be overshadowed amid cheap political point scoring. Nor the many benefits that immigration brings to our country each day, which we can so easily take for granted.

In times like these, I’m thankful for voices that speak facts and model courageous and creative compassion. The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is a good example. This week they’ve presented much needed facts on immigration in Australia, and many of the benefits we take for granted. They’ve called out decisions across all sides of politics. Immigration policy is complex and we will arrive at different positions. But may our thinking and actions be shaped by facts, loving compassion, just hearts, gratitude and listening to the real stories of real people. Sadly these things are often missing in much of the current debate. And like all of us, those who spruik division, will continue to benefit from all that people from across the globe bring to our lives every day in Australia.

In such a heated political climate, where we see so much misinformation, it’s an important time to show practical and genuine appreciation and care to those around us who are sadly labelled as “the problem” by those playing the race card. Neighbours, friends, colleagues, the waiter at our restaurant table, people sitting next to us on the train, a family in front of us in church …. so many Australians from other places do experience real hurt and genuine trauma; something those playing race politics seem to care very little about.
