Sadly, there will always be those who boo, motivated by voices that foster division, hated and fear. Many more rightly applauded after highly respected and much loved First Nations leaders concluded their Welcome to Country addresses in Sydney and Melbourne today.
On a day – whereas a nation we’re called together as a diverse people to show gratitude and pay respect – a small number, cowardly, ignorantly and intentionally sought to divide.
As we reflect on the sacrifice of so many Australians today, let’s remember the First Nations men who fought in both world wars, before they even had the right to vote. Let’s also remember today the pain and grief those boos bring to our First Nations friends.
And more, while it’s very good so many applaud, let’s go beyond applause and posts like this. Today reminds us of the ugliness of racist politics and divisive agendas. Today reminds us of the need to keep accepting the gracious invitation to walk alongside our First Nations friends on the long road to justice and reconciliation. Walking together, listening, learning, advocating and doing is the best way to respond to cowardly booing!
