Margin and surprise

First work flight of the year today and it was delayed. Nothing unusual about that for me. But I’ve been writing and leading some sessions on building more margin into busy lives. So, I’ve decided to try and see flight delays this year as added margin!

I don’t like delays, detours, queues, unexpected waits. But I’ve been asking myself, what if I try to see times like these this year as margin gains, rather than inconvenience. Times to catch my breath, rest, read, be still, write, dream, pray! I am hoping I can keep this attitude going throughout the year. Will let you know!

And I’m keen to embrace more curiosity and surprise in life in 2026.

It’s easy to get into a rut. I’ve been there too many times. Stuck and stale. A posture of curiosity and surprise opens our eyes and hearts to new things – to unexpected things – to unfamiliar territory, as well as discovering wonder and joy afresh in the everyday things of life that surround us.

It was good to go for a “let’s see where I end up run” in a part of Sydney that I am unfamiliar with this evening. I am keen to explore new running and walking tracks as I travel this year, as part of that broader yearning to be more curious and open to surprise.

This evening’s run led me along paths and tracks I have never been on before – and yes, good old Sydney Harbour doesn’t disappoint! I’m reminded that often God’s Spirit wants to lead us to places we have never been before. This always begins with a willingness to leave our comfort zones and well worn paths. It can be frightening, but it can open the door to things that deep down we yearn for.

Margin and surprise! Maybe like me, there two things you need more of in your life in 2026.
